Groundwater Urban Heat Island in Wrocław, Poland

چکیده

In the face of climate change and constantly progressing urbanization processes, so-called heat islands are observed with growing frequency. These phenomena mainly characteristic large cities, where increased air land surface temperatures form an atmospheric (AUHI) or (SUHI) urban island (UHI). Moreover, UHIs have also been recognized in underground environments many cities worldwide, including groundwater (GUHI). However, this phenomenon is not yet as thoroughly studied AUHI SUHI. To recognize characterize thermal conditions beneath city Wrocław (SW, Poland), we analyze temperature (GWT) first aquifer, measured 64 wells 2004–2005. The study aimed to identify (GUHI) Wrocław. Therefore, used a novel approach gather data them predefined seasonal periods. Meteorological satellite imagery from same period allowed us link GWT anomalies typical that favor UHI formation. anomaly related GUHI was identified central, urbanized part found occurs only seasonally during winter, which city’s zone anthropogenic sources. Comparing our results previous works other showed untypical behavior anomalies. contrast SUHI temperatures, detected characterized by transitions winter cold lake summer. Such transitional character described for time.

Urban Heat Island

We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports. It is especially significant on nights with clear skies and light winds which favor radiational cooling. This is most significant in the rural areas but in the city, the excess heat absorbed during the day and the local he...

Mapping Manchester’s urban heat island

An urban heat island (UHI) is a phenomenon whereby urban areas experience elevated temperatures relative to the surrounding rural hinterland. This thermal contrast is brought about by anthropogenic modification of the environment. For example, there is little bare earth and vegetation in urban areas. This means that less energy is used in evaporating water, less of the Sun’s energy is reflected...
